Can’t Sleep? Here are our Tips to on How to Sleep Better!
There are many things that you do during the day that affect your quality of sleep at night. From stress at work to chaos at home, there are many things out of our control that keep our minds racing and prevent us from having a good night’s rest.
Although we might not be able to manage every aspect of our day, we can adopt a number of sleep enhancing habits to improve our sleeping routine at night.
Turn off the lights
The light and dark are key cues to tell your body when it’s time to rest or when it’s time to get up. Therefore it only makes sense that a dark room will improve your quality of sleep as artificial light will send messages to your brain to wake up and stop the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. For this reason it is also important to avoid blue light in the bedroom, which is projected from the television, computer and mobile phone.
Take shorter naps
There is the misconception that regular naps will make you feel more awake. In fact, they can have the opposite effect by disturbing your natural sleeping pattern and preventing you from getting the rest you need. If you feel you must take a nap during the day, keep it short or go and do something active instead.
Rise and shine
In the same way that it’s important to go to sleep at a similar time every night, it’s better to wake up at the same time every day. This will further help to improve your routine – just be sure to stick to it on weekends too!
Food and drink
Being mindful of what you eat and drink in the evening can impact your rest pattern. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol and try not to eat a heavy meal too close to bedtime. A glass of warm milk or chamomile tea are perfect pre-bedtime treats to help you drift away easier.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise can help to improve your quality of sleep, so long as it’s at least three hours before you hit the sack. Exercising to close to bedtime can have the opposite effect and make it difficult for your body and mind to fall into a calmer state.
We hope these recommendations improve your quality of sleep.
